Birth:
Ssinss'Olath Aleval was born and raised as a noble daughter of the Aleval house in Karsoluthiyl, the drow city under Skullport. She was the fourth daughter and the youngest of 6 children. She was quite a surprise to her mother who didn't think she could even have children anymore. She was thought to be a gift of the Spider to help the minor family rise higher in the ranks. Another potential priestess to increase the family status. Unknowingly to the underdark denizen, she was actually born during the full moon that was closest to Toril for the next 100 years. Even as a baby, she was a soft one. She barely ever cried and was always more fascinated by sounds then colors or shiny things. When her nurse sang to her, she was the most animated.
Childhood:
Her status changed as she learned to make sounds and cemented when she started to speak and sing from a simple daughter, as an embarassement. Even before she learned to speak she would be heard singing unvoiced sounds to herself or trying to reproduce one when she heard sounds that fascinated her baby self. Punishing such a young child for mimicking sound, even if it was music was known to produce little effect exept make the child afraid to even speak and a priestess needed to speak, so they hoped she would lose her fascination for music as she grew up. Thought most of the time, she was left in the care of the slaves for she was only the fourth daughter, she would be sacrificed if needed. She was then named Ssinss'Olath, the dark temptress, a hope in her family they could turn her natural beauty, visible even as a very young child, into a weapon against other famillies. Since that day, she has been given classes on etiquette, manners, movements and deception, all for the glory of Lloth and the power of her familly. But somewhere in her heart, the young drow yearned for something more, something different. Music talked to her, but blood, murder, corruption and deception didn't. As such, she was always on the verge of something, despited her political and deception classes that horrified her. But they also are what explain that she managed to survive and hide her true self for so long. She might not like the deception classes, but she was good at being mysterious and secretive. It took only a few punishment for her to understand she could not show her softer nature to the others in the family. For she was caught trying to play with the slave-children of the house one evening, and was forced to see all the children she tried to play with killed for such a tresspass on a daughter of the house. It wouldn't do to have anyone spread tells of a daughter of Lloth playing with lowly slaves! The next one happened when she was still young and naïve enough to ask why she had to learn the whip on real people. Her question had so horrified one of her sisters that she got slapped and then had to endure a whole week of only faith classes on how best to please and appease Lloth as well as making penitence of getting whipped in front of the whole female part of her family. She only got another slap and more sermon after she started crying the first night. For a Female never showed weakness, nor cried for something as stupid has a bit of hurting.
The last punishment was meeted out after they bought an adult slave able to play beautifull music they would be able to enjoy during meals and evening or when entertaining others famillies for alliances. She was caught about a week after he arrived learning music from him. And not hymns to Lloth but songs about the surface and its beauty! They took the slave and broke his hands and hurt his throat in a way that he would recover enough to be a menial slave, but never be able to sing or play any instrument ever again. After that, she hid her true self and true heart deep inside her mind where no one would find them. But she didn't forget, she never forgot the small kindness of that slave that still had secret gentleness for her and was assigned to her as a reminder of what happens when she was too soft. As hate started to grow in her heart from all the evil around her, as well as what her family did to her, she became so good in all her political and charming classes that no one in the family could teach her anything more.
And so her second eldest sister started to take her with her when she went to Skullport to talk contract and alliances with the humans near the surface. It was on the first of such voyage that she heard a bard in the market. Under her sister's watchfull guard she couldn't show her interest but under the cover of the "night", with the help of her aging slave she snuck out of her room to try and find that bardess. The veiled woman was putting her instrument away when she got there and was very kind to the young drow, letting her touch her instrument and explain how each where played. For the week they were there, she met the bardess in secret each night while her sister partook the pleasure offered by their allies at the inn they stayed at.
As time went by, she was sent to the clerical school with only her old slave to take care of her. He was the one to hold her when she cried in secret after having done something horrible in the name of Lloth, he was the one to hold her when she was sick in the morning, for she knew more evil would be forced upon her, taking away her true self piece by piece. Her only escape where the Skullport negociations. Each and every time, she snuck out to talk to the bardess and her friends. Never in the same place, never exacly at the same time. Always carefull not to have her caught.
Young Adult Life:
After her slaves's death, she got herself a much younger slave, almost still a child, stating her intention to mold him for her exclusively. In essence, she wanted to save at least one less damage slave who would be able to understand her and also to save at least one person from a worse life. When he was getting older, she sent him to a house of pleasure stating she wanted him train to take care of her when she didn't have a regular lover. In truth, she wanted to reward his loyalty with the little pleasure she could. As she grew, the clerical school taught her more and more, as did her familly. She got many different teachers, some for haggling and dealing with surface dwellers, her sisters for lessons in seduction. Male slaves at first where her target, then she was assigned male from the family guards or from other minor houses's staff. The goals started small, get them to like her, trust her enough to do some minor transgression and then have her punish them. Which was a very hard thing for her, knowing after the first one that each time she succeeded in her mission, she would then have to hurt someone she had set up. But she did it, each time asking forgiveness in the secret of her heart. Once she managed to get someone from an equal status house to betray his house by spilling secret, her family judged her ready for the real work, to truly help her sister in Skullport.
She was now old enough to be sent without her elder sister, but with an escort, leaded by her eldest brother, to sabotaged the contract of the house she had gotten secret from in preparation for that mission. Her goal was double, sabotage the other house's attempt at a new alliance while also getting that alliance for her family's. It was the perfect opportunity to make new alliance for her Circle as well. They needed those new contact and alliance to be able to secret away slaves toward the surface and freedom before they were caught back. Everything was going well, she was making headway into seeding doubt about the other house and seducing her target for her family and every night, when she was done with her duties, she snuck out to see her bardic friends, who revealed themselves to her as drow, and talked to her about their faith now that they felt her ready to hear about someone else then Lloth. She took to Eilistraee's faith like a fish to water, but it made a ripple in the standing of her familly. They lost a lot of favor from Lloth when their youngest heart's turned from mother to daughter. They looked hard and fast but no one in the familly seemed to have done anything for that loss of favor. And they remembered the too osft heart of the youngest when she was still an baby. So they sent a message to her escort. That is when her brother started getting suspicious of how silent she was each night in her room. How little he saw her when she wasn't working toward the family goal. But what made him take measure was the fact a men was almost sure he had seen her in the crowd, for a second, one night she was supposedly in her room. And so, he posted guards in hiding around the inn with strict instructions to follow her should she leave the inn without him. And so they did, they followed her to one of her secret meetings to secure the help of smugglers and called in reinforcement with magic after listening in and making sure of her heresy.
They stormed the meeting and two male from her new circle that had come with her and her personal slave attacked her family's guard to give her and the smugglers time to flee. One of the smugglers took her with him and hid her from the search all her family launched. Such heresy, if known, could spark their destruction. It was the first time in her life she knew true hunger and fear. She had known disguss and shame, she had known pain and violence, but never before had she so feared or known hunger. For she couldn't get out, with all of her family's guard patrolling the area where she had disappeared, offering money and bullying their way into every houses. Before that moment, defying her family in secret to see the bardess had been trilling, but now it was terrifying. It was also the first time someone truly died because of her, not just from old age like her mentor, but sacrificed their lives so she could live free.
The smuggler who had helped her had a secret cave leading to the surface that started on the back of his house, a house that sat right next to one of Skullport's cave walls. But it wasn't an easy way up, it was a hard road with rocks that could fall on you, dangerous climb and treacherously small path on the side of crevasses. It was a 2 week's journey to the surface, with only a weeks of food the smuggler had in his house that wouldn't spoil. At least there were numerous water source around, even if the water tasted horrible, it was drinkable. It was also cold, for she was too afraid of capture to risk a fire.
She came to the surface haggard, hungry and with various small injuries that together made her a mass of hurt. The first thing she saw was the sun, so luminous it hurt. The orb magnified her fear and had her frozen in place for a long time. For she was unable to go back into the cave, too frightened by what her family would do to her should they caught up, but also afraid to be burned or turn blind from so much light. Simply rolled herself in her tattered clothing, hiding from everything.
Its only come the night she managed to look up again, to be amazed by the beauty of the night sky and its gentle moon. She had heard about the silver glittering guardian of the night, but she didn't had a reference before to imagine it. Had she been able to, she never could have come close to how beautiful it truly was. And so started her life on the surface. She went slowly at first, being awake at night under the watchful moon, hunting with her magic to be able to eat and trying to find a circle to take her in. Luckily the rest of Skullport's circle had managed to contact the closest circle on the surface from where she would exit and they dispatched two male and one priestess to find and help her.
It took her a long time to acclimate to the surface, for her not to cower in fear of falling into the sky each time the sun rose. For her to get her strength back from the straining journey toward the surface, but also to learn all she needed to survive on the surface as a drow. Oh, she could have done as some others that came to the surface did and hide in the secret village her saviors were part of. But she wanted more from life then a simple village one. She felt in her soul a need to not simply exist in peace but to fight so others could chose goodbess. To fight and dance against evil and sing for hope. She wanted a cause, a goal greater then herself. She needed all the evil and sacrifice she did before to mean something. She needed for the deaths that bought her way to the surface to have worth. So she learned all she could from the circle, as well as their allies who passed through and the rare spouses who weren't drow, for she needed to be able to pass for a regular elf under her veils. After about a decade, she took to the roads.
Where you are today:
Now fully prepared for the surface and for life, she embraced the life of an errant bardess, mysterious and secret, full of hope to help bring redemption to those seeking it without knowing it possible, a secret light for all those lost in the darkness. But also with a core of steel ready to fight against evil and not simply sing of hope to others but become that hope too. Hoping that her life would help the drow that would come later to find a place of their own on the surface without having to hide.
Views on the world:
She was both pampered and exposed to the worst people can do. She hadn't known poverty or what being a possession felt like before the surface and its freedom, but she had been beaten, had been forced to do horrible things to other living beings as well as forced to submit to a depraved goddess. As such, she knows intimately what evil look like, how seductive it can be, as well as how subtle it can start, which means she also know how to talk to those who are poisoned from it.But she also know that some revel in it too much to want anything else and thise needs to be killed so others could find their way to the light. The horror she saw, the death on her path, hardened her to those who refuse to change and take a step toward goodness and as decreed by The Dark Maiden, she is ready to bloody her hands with their life when needed.
